Difficulty: Red (challenging)
We do not climb to the summit of the Piton de la Fournaise. The closest we get to the volcano is the Pas de Bellecombe.
We’ll meet at the Pas des Sables parking lot, just before descending into the Plaine des Sables.
We start the day by taking the winding road down into the Plaine des Sables.
The goal of this route is to head toward Piton de Bert, then toward Pas de Bellecombe.
If you want you can book a full 5h trip for 150€ and during the second part of the day, depending on the weather and your preferences, we’ll explore the Cryptomeria forest, Trou Blanc, and Nez de Boeuf.
For much of the ride, you will have a view of the Piton de la Fournaise, one of the most active volcanoes on the planet.
It’s a sporty day reserved for athletes and/or those used to mountain biking on rough terrain.
The following advice applies to all hikes, but it’s especially important at the Volcano: Don’t forget sunscreen! We’ll be at over 2000 meters in altitude with the sun almost directly overhead, so you can get sunburned even in the rain.
